Legal Aid exists to help people access justice, even if they cannot afford to pay for a solicitor. It can cover the cost of legal advice, family mediation, and sometimes representation in court.

What Does Legal Aid Cover?
Legal Aid is available for certain family law cases, particularly where there is risk, abuse, or child protection concerns. It can help with:

- Care proceedings started by the local authority
- Child abduction or forced marriage cases
- Child arrangements where a child is at risk
- Mediation to resolve family disputes
Legal Aid is not usually available for divorce or financial matters unless there is evidence of domestic abuse or child protection issues.
How the Legal Aid Means Test Works
To qualify for Legal Aid, your financial situation is assessed through what is known as the means test.
This looks at:
- Your income (wages, benefits, or other earnings)
- Your savings and assets (including property and investments)
- Your dependants, such as children you support
If your gross monthly income is below around £2,657 and you have less than £8,000 in savings, you may qualify. Some benefits, such as Income Support or Universal Credit, can make you automatically eligible.
Evidence You’ll Need
When applying for Legal Aid, you will need to show documents such as:
- Proof of income and benefits
- Bank statements and savings details
- Tenancy agreements or mortgage information
- Evidence of domestic abuse, if relevant (such as a police report or court order)
